Job Summary:
The Customs and Border Protection Officer is responsible for safeguarding the United States borders by enforcing customs, immigration, and agricultural laws and regulations. This role requires conducting inspections and examinations of individuals, vehicles, and cargo entering or exiting the country to ensure compliance with federal laws. Customs and Border Protection Officers play a crucial role in maintaining national security and protecting the nation from illegal activities, including drug smuggling, human trafficking, and terrorism.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Perform inspections and examinations of individuals, vehicles, and cargo at designated ports of entry to detect and prevent the entry of illegal or prohibited items.
2. Enforce customs, immigration, and agricultural laws and regulations to protect the United States from illegal activities.
3. Interview travelers, examine travel documents, and assess their admissibility into the country.
4. Conduct searches and seizures of contraband, narcotics, and other prohibited items.
5. Operate various inspection equipment, such as X-ray machines, radiation detectors, and drug identification kits.
6. Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, including federal, state, and local authorities, to coordinate efforts and share intelligence.
7. Prepare detailed reports and maintain accurate records of inspections, seizures, and incidents.
8. Provide assistance and support during emergency situations, including natural disasters and security threats.
9. Participate in training programs to enhance knowledge and skills related to customs and border protection.
10. Stay updated with changes in laws, regulations, and procedures governing customs and border protection activities.
Qualifications and Skills:
1. Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, or a related field is preferred.
2. Must be a U.S. citizen.
3. Must possess a valid driver's license.
4. Must be able to pass a rigorous background investigation, including a credit check, drug test, and polygraph examination.
5. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
6. Strong attention to detail and the ability to make quick, accurate decisions under pressure.
7. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with diverse individuals.
8. Physical fitness and the ability to perform strenuous tasks, including lifting heavy objects and standing for extended periods.
9. Ability to work irregular hours, including weekends, evenings, and holidays, as required.
10. Knowledge of federal laws, regulations, and procedures related to customs and border protection is a plus.
